In 2018 and 2019, realising the lack of ideas on future alternative governance systems in Afghanistan, the idea of Cambridge Conference Series was born. The Massoud Foundation and Mr Ahmad Massoud offered to provide logistical and moral support for the series.
The conference series is named in honour of Ahmad Shah Massoud. Massoud was a devout Muslim, but his Islamist ideals were anathema to Taliban, al-Qaida, and their supporters and financial patrons in Pakistan and the Gulf Arab states. Also, Massoud’s political vision was challenging the Pashtun traditional elite’s vision of politics in Afghanistan. Ahmad Shah Massoud believed in a multi-ethnic, multi-confessional, and representative government for Afghanistan. He envisioned a society that represented the diverse ethnic, linguistic, and religious mosaic of Afghanistan.
To ensure the academic credibility and ensure its institutionalisation, an academic board is being established.
